BACKGROUND

Lawyers are licensed by a state agency in each state. That agency can help you to find out if a person has a law license and is permitted to practice in a particular state. Federal courts (such as U.S. district courts and U.S. courts of appeals) have their own admission requirements. Attorneys must apply for admission to practice in federal courts and pay any necessary fees. An attorney admitted in one state is not automatically allowed to practice in federal courts. They must separately seek admission to these courts. Some federal district courts permit attorneys licensed to the highest court of any state, while others only allow admission for attorneys licensed in the state courts of that specific state
